CandleTree Rosemary Sage hand-poured soy candle — candle care and safety guide

Care Guide

Candle Care & Safety

Follow these habits to get the best performance out of your hand-poured soy candle.

The First Burn

Soy wax has a memory. The first time you light your candle, allow it to burn until the wax pool melts all the way to the edge of the glass before you extinguish it. If you blow it out too early, the wax will only ever melt in the center on subsequent burns — a problem called tunneling. Allowing a full melt pool on the first burn sets the candle up for an even burn throughout its life. How long this takes depends on the size of the candle; check your candle's label for guidance.

Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

Before each burn, trim your wick. A trimmed wick produces a stable, controlled flame and reduces soot on the glass. An untrimmed wick mushrooms at the tip, draws more fuel than it needs, and creates a larger, less stable flame that can shorten the candle's life. Trim to approximately 1/4 inch using a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or your fingers — when the wax is fully cold. Always remove any trimmings from the wax before relighting.

Burn Time

Do not burn your candle continuously for extended periods. Long, uninterrupted burns cause the wick to become unstable, the wax pool to overheat, and the glass to get dangerously hot. Burn your candle in reasonable sittings, allow it to cool completely and the wax to solidify fully before relighting. Never touch or move a candle that has liquid wax — the glass retains heat. Always follow the maximum burn time guidance printed on your candle's label.

What's Normal for Soy Wax

If you are new to soy candles, a couple of things might look unusual at first. Both are completely normal.

  • Frosting: A white, slightly crystalline coating that can appear on the wax surface. This is a natural characteristic of pure soy wax — it has no effect on the fragrance or how the candle burns.
  • Wet spots: Small areas where the wax appears to have pulled slightly away from the inside of the glass. This is caused by temperature changes during shipping or storage, and does not affect performance.

Safety

  • Never leave a burning candle in an unattended room.
  • Keep burning candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always place your candle on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface.
  • Keep away from curtains, paper, books, and any material that can catch fire.
  • Keep away from drafts, open vents, and fans, which can cause uneven burning or tipping.
  • Discontinue use when only a small amount of wax remains at the bottom of the jar — refer to the warning label on your specific candle for the exact guidance.
  • Do not touch or move a burning candle or one with liquid wax. The glass retains heat.
  • Follow all instructions on the product warning label.
