The Process
The Hand-Poured Difference
In an era of mass production, every CandleTree candle is still poured by hand in Concord, NH. Here's why that matters.
What Hand-Poured Actually Means
Not all candles described as "handmade" are created the same way. At CandleTree, hand-poured means that every candle is physically filled by a person — not an automated machine — in small batches in our Concord workshop. Each container is handled individually from wick placement to the final pour. There is no filling line moving quickly past a person who presses a button; Ross pours each batch with direct attention to what is happening in the jar.
Small Batches Mean Better Quality Control
Large-scale candle production is built for throughput. Speed is the priority, and the equipment is set to run consistently rather than to respond dynamically. When you pour in small batches, you can actually watch what is happening: whether the fragrance oil is binding properly, whether the wick is holding its position, whether the wax is cooling at the right rate. Problems that would pass unnoticed on a production line get caught and corrected before a batch is finished.
Quality control in a small-batch operation is not a separate inspection step. It is built into the act of pouring.
The Craft Behind the Pour
Ross Mingarelli has been pouring candles since 2016 — first in his Concord basement, then in the workshop behind the storefront he opened on North Main Street in 2019. The knowledge that makes a candle perform well — the right temperature, the right fragrance load for the volume of wax, the timing of each step — builds through repetition and close attention over thousands of pours. It is practical craft knowledge, and it shows in the finished product.
What You Actually Get
A hand-poured candle from CandleTree has a centered wick, evenly distributed fragrance, and wax that burns predictably. The marbled appearance — the detail that makes each candle visually unique — is only possible through the specific hand-pour technique Ross uses. A machine calibrated for uniformity would eliminate exactly the temperature variation that produces the marbling. The craft is what creates the look.
When you buy a hand-poured candle, you are buying something made with genuine attention. That is the difference — not a label, but a standard maintained at every step.
